This nice restaurant is located on the rowdy side of the Flats. The view of the river traffic makes dining there a treat. For dinner, make reservations!
Brunch:
This place has one of the better brunches in the area! Get there when the brunch starts, eat like a pig, and sleep the rest of the day. Just don't lean too close when they're making your omelette.
Dinner:
The seafood here was very fresh and well prepared. I had the Hawaiian blue and my wife the shrimp "dejohnne." One minor quibble would be the portion size, which is on the small side. Like Cape Cod, dress is casual.
The service fits the restaurant. Which is to say that the service is polished. The serving staff does a good job.
The price, too, follows the restaurant type. I felt that their meals are correctly priced. It's not a deal, but you aren't being ripped-off, either.
Big, independent restaurant with a great view on the edge of the river. Great in summer to sit on the patio and watch the big ore boats and pleasure boats.
Great professional service. The manager is very knowledgeable about wine. Reasonably priced. Dress ranges from casual to businessmen.
Outstanding brunch on Sunday. Great Mother's Day spread, but with a reservation not hurried. Strong on fresh seafood. I've been there for lunch an dinner and it is consistently good.
We had reservations for five, of whom two of the guests were from out of state. We waited for well over an hour for our reserved table as we were shoved in a corner bar table being ignored. It had rained so all the patrons outside took up the tables inside.
Waiting forever to be seated, very early in the evening, we saw a group of a dozen march right in and get served immediately. Other couples walked in ahead of them and were seated but we took no offense to the small parties being served. Well that was the last straw when the new group waltzed right in, and we discovered the little side room was sitting there vacant all the time we waited. It is obvious if we were seated at our appointed time we would have been done and gone 15 minutes before the larger party arrived. Of course we had to leave and found a lovely enjoyable Cleveland restaurant instead. I suppose I will never actually get to eat at the Watermark.
We were extremely embarrassed in front of our out of state guests. Sad, very sad. The rude and oblivious staff was probably the worst part. I would not want to be there during their busy hours.
The Watermark, situated along the east bank of the Cuyahoga, has a great atmosphere and an inviting ambience. The alfresco terrace (open weather permitting) is a great place to watch boats and people wiz by.
"Inconsistent" would be the best way to describe the food! We have had wonderful fish on some evenings and cool (supposed to be warm) pasta swimming in oil with rancid-tasting meat on another night. When we rented a private room for a party of 35 people, the food could best be described as "edible." On our most recent visit, the tuna was delicious and the pasta was fine.
Service seems to be consistently good to very good. Waitstaff is friendly and helpful, but could be more candid about specific entree choices.
The prices are moderate and reasonable, given the decor and food style. When the food is good, the prices are appropriate. Food of poor quality should justify a free meal!
Decor B+. Service, I would have to give it an F. We had reservations for a 50th Wedding Aniversary and did not get our table that was reserved, for over one hour. This was the Sunday brunch so by the time we ate everything was picked over. Then there was a cockroach on the wall but we were told it was a water bug. As for what you get for your money, I would recommend the Blue Point up the hill from the Watermark on West 6th.
The decor and location in the flats is great. It sits right on the river and has a spectacular view when dining on the terrace. The restaurant was very clean and could easily accommodate large groups.
For the price the food was very unimpressive. The food was bland and very small portions, though a typical meal (without salad) was over $20. I've had better food in a pub or at a chain bistro like Fridays.
The service was particularly bad. We had our food about 1 hour after we order. We got there 10 minutes after they opened on a Sunday (5 PM). By time we left it was only about a third full. I don't think I've waited that long for food even in a busy restaurant.
For the portions and the quality of food this restaurant was over priced. I don't fret about spending a little more on good food but it seems the money is going into the cost of their real estate rather than the cuisine.
If you want to sit a couple hours and enjoy the scenery of the Cuyahoga River and The Flats, Watermark is the place for you. If you want good food and good service at a reasonable price, I think you can do better elsewhere.
